Amongst the reports of General Washington's troops success in a night action against General Burgoyne's troops and South Carolina militia activity is a gem headlined "BON MOT of Mrs. Thrale." Upon being asked by a Frenchman when she thought the Americans would be conquered, Mrs. Thrale replied, in part, "When America belonged to the French, the English found no difficulty in subduing it; but now that it is defended by our Countrymen, the task of conquering is not so easy."
