An adventurous aviator, he was a winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor for his reported first flight over the North Pole. Very nice copy of Byrd's book chronicling his historic South Pole expedition, Little America: Aerial Exploration in the Antarctic-The Flight to the South Pole (GP Putnam's Sons: New York, 1930).
